Jacksonville Ranked One Of The Least Safe Cities In The Nation For Bicyclists

Bicyclist deaths a serious problem in Florida

In 2016, there were a total of 840 bicyclist deaths across the United States, which made up 2.2 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The report also found that:  

• 71 percent of all bicyclist fatalities happened in urban areas 
• 30 percent happened at intersections, 6 percent happened on shoulders, and 4 percent happened in bicycle lanes 
• 51 percent happened during daylight hours and 45 percent happened at night 

As an influx of bike-share programs reaches many large metro areas, bicycle accidents are bound to increase. One of those metro areas is Jacksonville, which ranks the most dangerous in the nation for bicyclists. From 2007 to 2016, bicyclist deaths averaged around six or more per 1,000,000 people. 

In 2016, the Sunshine State had a total of 138 bicyclist deaths, which represents 4.3 percent of all statewide traffic fatalities. Jacksonville had a total of 7 bicyclist deaths, which made up 4.7 percent of the metro area's traffic fatalities.  

Common factors in bicycle accidents 

Florida law (Title XXIII, Chapter 316.083) requires drivers to maintain a minimum of three feet when passing a bicyclist. However, not all drivers comply with this law. One of the most common factors in bicycle accidents is distracted driving. Texting and driving is against the law in Florida and across the nation. However, not enough is being done to mitigate the problem.
