There have been an alarming number of motorcycle fatalities in the Jacksonville area this month. Just since May 2nd there have been 9 motorcyclists killed on the roadways in Northeast Florida. Motorcycles are intrinsically more dangerous because they are less stable and not as visible as cars. Because their riders don’t have the protection of an enclosed vehicle, they are much more likely to be injured or killed.
According to federal government statistics, for every mile traveled in 2013, the number of deaths on a motorcycle was more than 26 times the number in cars.
According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida has the most motorcycle deaths in the country. While motorcyclists make up 7% of licensed drivers they accounted for one-fifth of the vehicle fatalities in the state, News4JAX reports.
Among the motorcycle deaths in our area this month: a 36-year-old man who left behind 5 children, a 26-year-old whose motorcycle collided with a turning car, a 28-year-old who hit a concrete barrier, was thrown off his bike and hit by a truck, and a 22-year-old woman who died in a crash on the Buckman Bridge.
Please use caution when driving a motorcycle and for all other drivers on the road, be sure to look twice, avoid driving while distracted and be safe on our roadways.
