There have been a slew of accidents involving Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) buses in recent months.
On Wednesday, September 25th, two people were critically injured and two more suffered minor injuries in a collision between a city bus, a dump truck and two other vehicles. The crash happened on Dunn Ave. near the Florida State College at Jacksonville North Campus.
The bus was headed west on Dunn at around 3 p.m. when it made a left turn onto North Campus Blvd. and collided head-on with the truck. The bus careened to the south and struck another vehicle which was then pushed into the one parked behind it. The driver and a passenger in the truck were extracted from the vehicle and taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition. Two passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries.
A month earlier, a JTA bus and pick-up collided on Atlantic Blvd. at Century 21 Dr., causing injuries to at least six people, including two children. The bus was heading eastbound on August 19 when the crash occurred.
In June, a 61-year-old Jacksonville man died after he was hit by a city bus on West State St. According to police, the man died when his head was clipped by the bus’s side view mirror. The man fell to the ground and was run over by the rear wheels of the bus. The accident occurred at the intersection of Laura St. and West State St. One witness said that the man was cleaning up trash at the corner near the JTA terminal when the accident happened.
Another pedestrian died after being hit by a JTA bus on July 27 at the corner of Beaver St. and Newnan St. in downtown Jacksonville. The accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Another man was hit by a city bus on the Matthews Bridge on August 21.
Accidents involving buses are not a new concern for JTA.
According to the minutes from a meeting of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, a report entitled “Accident Reduction/ Improvement Plan” was presented at the January 31, 2013 board meeting. The report outlined several key initiatives aimed at reducing accidents on bus routes. The report tracked accidents by driver and JTA’s “20 worst performers” were identified and required to attend additional training.
